Smoked Cherry
Entertain it they say, we’ll jest and drink
Throw my midnight hair up and away
Curl up my pride
Let it kindle the fire
None of us legal, none of us wise
We bounce around sand and ash
Crunching the soles
Of our filled shoes
Clank our cans and sing
Make a song of seventeen, so
Grand, so clumsy
Guide him through the smoke
Straight to me
Liquid in my cup can’t stop my twirling my hair,
sniffing my sweater for the
Stench of smoke
The blazing fire puts my heart in my hands
Oh how I’m thankful for my youth
And the glow of my skin
Young naive passion is kindling tonight
It intoxicates the smoke
White wine coats your lips, a drunken grin can’t hide your sweetness
Your nerves
Tipsy, clumsy,
Inching closer, the brown, twisted ringlets on your head
Reek of the smoke
Fumble next to me, ignore the laughter that erupts,
Crack open more! Let loose!
Leave us alone by the smoke
We’re new to this,
We’re young, we’re keen, interlocking sleeves
Laughing at nothing at all
Kids, our friends, they root for us
Our safe passage through the smoke.
